We have a short term renter who
didn't let the water run enough at her mobile Fri night
So Sunday was spent mostly worrying
over that & connecting with the plumber,
and digging out the
side panel because he wanted to connect to the water pipe also
It froze up in the ground years
ago, and my son had set up the mobile with an easy access thaw
wire
and we don't want to spend another $300 on that task,
so we always ask renters to run the
water during winter time and into first week in May
Paul didn't bring the heavy duty
arc welder that runs on diesel,
but 2 smaller electrical ones.
He was getting 320 amps and let it
go for over an hour, and it wasn't doing anything
He said, something is not right
(The distance to the street
would mean amps of 100 or so, not 300 indicating it wasn't going
that far)
Well we fixed up an alternate
system for the renter,
garden hose from the neighbor
trailer,
and a splice into the water pipe
At that time, half hour after doing
any heat clamp at all ....
the pipe was extremely hot the
whole distance that it ran ...to the back of the unit.
When my son called & heard how
things had gone, he reminded us that the electric company cut
into our sewer line there already
when they installed the new
electrical boxes on all houses / mobiles in town about 3 years
ago
That was a big ordeal, and they
didn't want to pay anything at all ... and ended up with
some minor reimbursement then.
As I think about it, we could
have a ruined hot water tank, or the renter's computer could
be damaged, it it was plugged in ... etc
She could still be at risk for
fire tonight, as well
BUT
worker, Paul, was at serious
risk, too
it was wet
outside & he could have been hurt; us; others
If this has happened to us;
then it could have happened to scores of others.
Paul says he already has two
other temporary set ups like he just did for us.
No one would think that the
thaw wire had been cut in two,
and causing a dangerous
situation
