| It took 10 years to raise the
minimum wage but the
bank bailout was done overnight without debate. One of the things that will probably come back with the Democrats is the Fairness Doctrine; that political presentations on the radio must be balanced. This could be devastating to the present domination of the right wing on talk radio. People like Rush Limbaugh would be hit hard. Political cycles are led by economic cycles and if the economy continues to decline, social welfare will make a comeback. If Ronald Reagan made "Liberal" a dirty word; we may soon see "conservative" a dirty word. "Deregulation" already has developed a bad connotation in the last two months. In what will go down as one one of the stupidest moments in U.S. economic history; the Big Three Auto CEOs flew three corporate jets to Washington to ask for a bailout. That bailout is now tabled. Up until Franklin Roosevelt, the economy was thought separate from the state. Herbert Hoover was a self made man and thought everyone could be successful like him with hard work and wise decisions. It took a man handicapped by polio to understand that people can be struck with misfortune through no fault of their own. Misfortune is the great teacher of compassion. Loss of health and money are their own universities. Mr. P |
