James Gunion

Lifelong Valdez resident James Donovan Gunion died Nov. 8, 2009. He was 46.

A service will be at 2 p.m. today at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Valdez Elks Lodge.

James "Jim" was born May 9, 1963, in Valdez Community Hospital, to Donovan Bernon Gunion and Charlotte Ann Cronk Gunion. Jim spent several of his younger years doing janitorial for the Valdez City Schools. In the early '90s, he worked as head of maintenance for Prince William Sound Community College and then started his own carpet-cleaning business, which he operated for several years.

Jim later joined the Local 341 and spent most of the last decade working at the Alyeska Marine Terminal as a laborer. Jim was a single, working father.

Jim enjoyed shrimping, snowmobiling, pool, card games, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte; his grandparents; and cousin Daniel.

(Daniel Gunion worked on the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup / died 1989?)

Jim is survived by his son, Dustin; father, Don; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Rachelle; nieces, Kaitlynn and Keara; nephew, Jaden; sister, Dawn; nieces, Heather and Pamela; nephews, Christopher and Joshua; uncle and aunt, Wayne and Jackie Gunion; cousins, Jason and Kim of Valdez; niece, Desirae of Valdez; half-sisters, Beverly Lent and Debbie Norwood of Minnesota, Diane Finneman of North Dakota; and half-brothers, Darrell, Terry and Kenneth of Minnesota. Jim leaves behind numerous other relatives and beloved friends.

So sorry for your loss; our loss! Based on the type of work he has done, he didn't have much of a chance to avoid glycol ether, which would most probably cause his death even years later. (Other things always get the blame). What job did he have in 1989 summer?

I think I first learned to drive, with Jim at the wheel. I am so sorry for your loss. Jim was really funny, and I enjoyed tagging along with him and my big brother, Mike, when they hung out together. We are thinking of the Gunion family.

WOW, what a shock, not very old, I'm only 12 days younger than Jim, we grew up together, went to school, fished, snowmobiled, rode his horses, chased salmon in the creek by his house, cruised the strip in our hot rods, chased woman...
Haven't talked to him for years, makes a person think about keeping in touch with all of your old friends, you never know when it's your turn or someone else's.
To his family, my deepest condolences, may God be with you all...

To Dad,Patrick,Dawn Marie,Dustin, and other close family members to Jimmy,

Brad and I want to express how "very" sorry we are for your loss. We can both say that we know "in part" what you are going through with me grieving the loss of my mother and Brad having lost both of his parents and his only son. It is only with the grace of God, and drawing from His strength and comfort that any of us come through it. May you draw from "His" resources in the "going through".

God is good in that He finds ways to bring good from painful sad times in our lives. May your family be drawn closer to each other during this time of loss.... may just the realization of the brevity of life cause you to embrace what you have ~ while you have it....may we make the most of everyday ....not putting off for tomorrow what we can do today...and may we let our loved ones know that they are loved and not let petty differences divide us.

I do not have a lot of memories of Jimmy... (a regret that I do not have more). BUT when I think of Jimmy, I think of the time that Brad and I came out to Alaska and went Salmon and Halibut fishing. Jimmy was on the same chartered boat with us. I will treasure the picture that we took of him with one of the fish that he brought in. When I think of Jimmy, I have only good memories of the nice way that he always treated me whenever I came out to visit. May you find much comfort as you "relive" YOUR memories of your son~ your dad~ your brother~ your uncle~ your nephew~ your cousin~ and your friend.

You are very much in our prayers and thoughts.

With much love,

your daughter and sister,
Diane (and Brad)
