Robert Charles Durman Mitchum (August 6, 1917 – July 1, 1997) was an American film actor, author, composer and singer.

He died on July 1, 1997, shortly before his 80th birthday, in Santa Barbara, California, due to complications of lung cancer and emphysema. He was survived by his wife of 57 years (something of a Hollywood record), Dorothy Mitchum, and actor sons, James Mitchum, Christopher Mitchum, and daughter Petrina (Trina) Mitchum.

I would suspect people think that smoking would cause the lung cancer & the emphysema.  Emphysema can be an autoimmune issue .... and so can aspects of lung cancer.  I suspect exposure to glycol ether.  Lungs filling up with fluid can be an autoimmune issue. . . not pneumonia as would be suspected (a chemical exposure)
