Small Red Blood Cells? Red blood cells that are small-sized, |
||
| The term 'microcytosis' means small red cells. The three main causes are iron deficiency, some cases of the anemia of chronic disease, and the thalassemia syndromes. Sideroblastic anemia is one of the rarer causes. Not only are the cells small, but they are also pale (hypochromic). It is hard to judge red cell size from a blood film, but as a rough guide, the red cell should be about the same size as the nucleus of the small lymphocyte. The measured 'mean corpuscular volume' (MCV) is a much more accurate guide to red cell size. As a genetic disease or alpha-1, the amount of smaller red blood cells is usually in a higher amount. | ||
