Hereditary angio-oedema is an autosomal dominant condition resulting in a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor protein in serum. The condition is characterized by oedematous attacks in the skin, mucous membranes and gastrointestinal tract triggered by mental and physical stress. We present the rare case of a young girl with known hereditary angio-oedema and spina bifida occulta being admitted for an elective pilonidal sinus excision. This case presented different challenges for the anaesthetists and surgeons.

If you weren't using new cleaning products at that time, then I suspect second hand exposure to the 2-butoxyethanol type chemical. The pilonidal sinus may be an autoimmune response to this exposure.

So, did you attend some sports arena event? Did you participate in a running race? Did someone new come around at that time, either in your personal life or your work?

People strongly exposed can breath the chemical out in their respiration and the molecules of chemical can get into your eyes (a primary route of exposure). I heard of a man who attended a sports event and immediately thereafter he became ill and had a brain tumor start up that grew to the size of a grapefruit.

My husband cleaned the carpet in one of our rentals and stood very near me a couple of days later. I had diarrhea and vomiting. One week later, the same thing; except I only had diarrhea (Remember what happened to Jett Travolta? after carpet cleaning in his home he came down with Kawasaki Disease & almost died at age 2; at age 16 years I suspect the advance anemia of this chemical exposure ... led to his seizures and ultimate death - my opinion)

Once my husband had been doing a work project where he would have had some small exposure to this chemical. He was on one side of me and the nostril on that side of me started loosening ... and dripping. Other nostril not affected

Abstract
In vitro lymphocyte adhesion to, and selective radiosulphate uptake by, endothelial cells has been demonstrated in chronically inflamed tissues of patients with peptic ulceration, rheumatoid disease, pilonidal sinus, autoimmune thyroiditis, polymyositis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and pyelonephritis. These characteristics have been described previously in endothelial cells functionally specialized for promoting lymphocyte traffic from blood to lymph node parenchyma. It is suggested that these observations indicate that some vessels in inflamed tissues may be, at least in part, responsible for the selective accumulation of lymphocytes within the tissue. Manipulating the development of this type of vessel may offer a novel way of influencing the progress of inflammatory disorders.
