Scientists close to diabetes cure

VICTORIAN scientists have discovered a gene
responsible for the most common form of diabetes,
bringing them closer to a cure.
The discovery of the PSARL gene, linked to Type 2
diabetes, will be revealed at a conference in
Washington tomorrow, the Sunday Herald Sun said.
More than 100,000 Australians are diagnosed with
Type 2 diabetes every year.
The disease, which is recognized
as an epidemic, is costing Australian taxpayers about
$3 billion annually.
Diabetes is known as a lifestyle disease, commonly
linked to a bad diet and a lack of exercise.
